Report on all CIMA insurance markets

Financial year 2020

In 2020, international economic activity was negatively impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic, which also dragged the world economy into recession. The growth rate of the world Gross Domestic Product (GDP) stood at -3.5% in 2020 against 2.8% in 2019.

Economic growth in sub-Saharan Africa, as in other regions of the world, has declined. Sub-Saharan GDP growth rate fell from 3.3% in 2019 to -1.9% in 2020, following the double shock of supply and demand, linked to health measures to contain the spread of Covid-19.

In the CIMA zone, activity slowed down sharply within WAEMU with a GDP growth rate set at 0.9% in 2020 against 5.7% in 2019; it deteriorated in the CEMAC countries where GDP fell, from a growth rate of 2% in 2019 to -2.9% in 2020.
